The Kansas Masonic Alliance With The KU Cancer Center

  • A Rich History Together

Since 1974, the Kansas Masonic Foundation has partnered with the University of Kansas to fight cancer and improve people’s lives. Over the years, the Kansas Masonic Foundation has contributed more than $30 million to the KU Medical Center.

  • The Requested Endowment

As The KU Cancer Center embarks on a new quest for comprehensive cancer center designation, there is a request for a $5 million endowment from the Kansas Masonic Foundation, over a multi-year period, to permanently endow the alliance.

  • Benefits of the Endowment

The endowment commitment will establish funding for cancer education and research in partnership with the KU Medical Center. The significant contribution will help change the future fight against cancer, enabling more lives to be saved.

The benefits of the initiative are many and include:

    • Linking Kansas communities with the National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer research and expertise available at The University of Kansas Cancer Center.
    • Connecting patients to second opinions and support health education programs close to home.
    • Partnering with the Kansas medical community to advance the quality and reach of comprehensive cancer care.
    • Hosting life-saving cancer screening events across the region.

The partnership will provide support for outreach, professional education and membership meetings, staff development and the opportunity to permanently endow the alliance.

What People Are Saying

“We are in the Kansas Masonic Cancer Research Institute building. We have five floors of basic cancer researchers. The Kansas Masonic Foundation was an original investor, like the family and friends who believed in us and got us going. One of the initial programs was to take our cancer prevention and screening efforts out into the community by partnering with local lodges. It’s been huge.”

Dr. Roy Jensen, Director Kansas Masonic Cancer Research Institute

“My name is Vicki, and I am a cancer survivor. I went to the screening that the Masons had in our local downtown square. I had a funny freckle on my arm, so I asked the doctor to look at that. She said I needed to get it checked. I made an appointment with a dermatologist, they looked at it and said it needed to be biopsied. I got a call from my dermatologist, and he told me that it was melanoma cancer. The fact that they caught it so early— they probably saved my life.”

Vicki Hay Melanoma Cancer Survivor

“Lodges do all the hard work. They identify a time, set up the location, and partner with the community, and we get to come in and provide the screenings.”

Hope Krebil, Executive Director Midwest Cancer Alliance
